Working Bee October 2009
Gardening at Helen Street
The school has started a Gardening Group with parents and children coming together to work on the garden spaces around the school, as well as maintenance activities such as sweeping leaves to add to compost bins.
Our projects for 2006, for which we received outside funding were:
1. School entrance gardens - funded by a Mitre 10 landcare grant
This involved:
- planting the front garden area with indigenous plants
- planting a small she oak forest.
Children planted the plants and are involved in ongoing maintenance such as weeding, watering.
We also bought and commissioned a worm farm. Classes take their food waste and recycle into either to the worm farm, or compost bins, for later use on either the flower or vegetable gardens.
2. Vegetable garden -funded by Darebin Council community grant
This involved the building of a vegetable garden where raised beds have been constructed along the Hawthorn Rd boundary of the school.
The Gardening group aims to progressively involve children and parents in the care and development of the school grounds.
